This is the season of remakes and unfortunately there is nothing we can do about it. The remake of Qurbani is in the pipeline which has Fardeen Khan playing the role enacted by his father in the original film.

News is pouring in that none other than motor-mouth Mallika Sherawat is all set toaap%2Bka%2Bsuroor.jpg play the role of nightclub dancer named Sheela immortalized by the sensuous Zeenat Aman. Personally I don’t think Sherawat can pull it off as Zeenat had a touch of class which lacks in Mallika. Feroz Khan himself will play the gum-chewing cop, played by Amjad Khan in Qurbani .

Nobody belly dances better than the original ‘item’ girl, Helen.

The dancer and actress sizzled in the 1960s and 1970s in films like Don, Howrah Bridge, Teersi Manzil and Caravan.

She wriggled her hips in the Mehbooba Mehbooba song from the classic Sholay, distracting the dreaded bandit Gabbar Singh and the audience as well.

Now, Mallika Sherawat takes on the original in Himesh Reshammiya’s upcoming film, Aap Ka Surroor.

Looking lovely in green, the outspoken actress sways and shakes her hips to Reshammiya’s rendition of Mehbooba.

But hips don’t lie.

So, who is the better mover and shaker? Is it Helen, the original Mehbooba girl, or Mallika, the oomph girl?

actressDasavatharam starring Kamal Haasan in ten different roles features Mallika Sherawat and Asin in pivotal roles. Directed by K S Ravikumar, a major portion of the movie has been already shot.

Produced by Oscar Ravichandran, Dasavatharam, one of the costliest movies to be made in Tamil, will be released this Deepavali.

Noted Bollywood music-composer Himesh Reshammiya has composed tunes for the film.

Buzz is that Kamal Haasan’s daughter Shruthi Haasan, daughter of Kamal Haasan, has sung a song for the movie. A racy number, it was shot on Mallika Sherawat.

She is the youngest lass amongst Bollywood’s heroines’ brigade…she is Hansika Motwani , the upcoming beautiful Bollywood star has recently debuted opposite the singer with a nasal twang and now an actor Himesh Reshammiya in a movie – Aap Ka Surroor . Also known as a child artist, Hansika has been a very popular household name, having worked in television soaps such as ‘ Kyunki Saas bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi ‘ and films such as ‘ Koi Mil Gaya ‘, ‘ Hawa ‘ amongst many others.

The 16-year-old pretty girl Hansika speaks her thoughts aloud and makes a lot of sense even at such a tender age. Hansika openly speaks about the controversies that involve her and sex bombshell Mallika Sherawat . She said that she has no problem with the Miss Sherawat during the shooting and she knows how to deal with her co-stars.

Hansika is surely a babe to watch out for and we are eagerly waiting for her forthcoming releases.

MUMBAI - It’s time to meet the man himself. “Aap Kaa Surroor - The Movie” has had the biggest opening of 2007, became a major hit and confounded the “intellectual” critics. So what is Himesh Reshammiya’s game-plan now? Will he return to music, having proved his point? Will he only act? Will he go into acting overdrive just as he did as a singer? And - dare I think of it - will he make a sequel?

India-West talks to the over-busy composer-singer-actor caught in a frantic schedule. When a face-to-face isn’t possible, we fix up a phone chat. That does not happen over four fixed appointments - he is still busy in promotions in other centers and basking-in-the-success interviews. Finally, he leaves for Hyderabad one morning, moves to Chennai by noon and we finally talk as Himesh is driving to his hotel from the airport - on the phone, of course.

Excerpts from an interview follow.

Q: You have vindicated yourself.

A: The hype is one thing, the genuine success another. I want to talk money to give a resounding answer to those critics who slammed my film. It feels great that my film has been declared the biggest opener of 2007. The distributors have earned five times their investment already - which makes it qualified as a super-hit. At another level, I also want to win over that one percent of the media that has always been against me, has never been able to accept my success and for whom everything about Himesh Reshammiya is s**t!

Q: To what do you attribute such a phenomenal degree of success? You had announced the month of release and even the release date long back.

A: June 29 is my mother’s birthday and it’s my parents’ blessings apart from those of God as well as the support and best wishes of all my fans and well-wishers that has done the magic. We planned everything astrologically as well as according to the needs of the market and the expectations from my fans. Prashant Chadha’s concept, script and direction were also brilliant.

Q: What about the contribution of your talent and hard work?

A: Yes, I did work hard, as I have always worked on every film of mine, which is why so many albums of mine have always been profitable for the music companies even when the films did not do well. But by itself, I think that talent is bull-s**t!

Q: That’s a drastic remark. Explain.

A: Everything is about destiny - which primarily means God’s will and your parents’ and everyone’s goodwill. It is only when you have this base that you start doing successful work. Without such forces, even a more hardworking and talented person will not be able to deliver the kind of work that leads to success. God has been very kind to me. Someone told me that even legends like Mukesh-ji and Talat Mehmood-ji failed as actors, and that I am the first male singer after institutions like K.L. Saigal-saab and Kishore (Kumar)-da to become a success as a star. That makes me doubly blessed.

Q: How did you manage a decent performance without any training? And what made you so confident about acting as a leading man?

A: Prashant is more like a brother, I know him for 16 years and he has directed all my videos. He was supremely confident of his script, and he was supremely confident about me! He and my producer Vijay Taneja made the film with conviction and since it was even more important to Prashant that he could not afford to let me down, I never worried about that angle, because I also blindly trust his judgment.

As for my performance, all the legendary actors have been and are like my gurus. And I knew just one thing - since I compose from my heart and sing from my heart and so I had to act from my heart!

Q: What has been the industry’s feedback?

A: It has been very supportive. Salman-bhai congratulated me for excellent work, putting an end to current rumors by that same section of the media that we were having problems. For me, he is simply my mentor. Without Salman-bhai, Himesh Reshammiya would not have been here in films.

Q: Has Sonu Nigam called you?

A: No, but I still won’t believe that he said all those things against me till I meet him. I have never spoken a word against him. He has sung so many of my songs and is the best singer in the country.

Q: What do your detractors have against you?

A: I wish I knew. Even now, when we were showing two promos with Mallika (Sherawat)-ji, they insisted on writing that Mallika had only an item song and was charging Rs. 1.5 crore. When we had all along planned a new face as heroine, they said that I had approached Priyanka Chopra!

Q: What are you planning now?

A: I will do three films in the next twelve months as a complete package of actor, composer and singer - my fans and our distributors want this now and I cannot let them down. Prashant has begun work on the sequel to “Aap Kaa Surroor,” there will be a second film in which I will not be HR but another character, and a third might be a two-hero project. I plan to restrict my work to three films a year, and that means just 18-20 outstanding tunes. My fans have given me all this though I am not a great looker or a great actor and have an unconventional voice. I have to give them something new musically as well within the indispensable format of melody.

Q: What happens to your stock? Do you still compose a song a day?

A: I must confess that there are days now when it is not possible because of my schedule. But yes, I still compose a tune every day whenever possible.

For all those who care to look beyond Mallika Sherawat’s bosom, news is that the actress is turning a businesswoman. She is all set to start a production house with her brother Vikram very soon. If she chooses to produce the kind of films she acts in, other production houses will have to shut shop soon!

Apparently, Mallika(Pictures) has wanted to start a production company for quite some time and now finally, the idea is crystallising. The name of the film will be Blue Velvet and the actress is currently busy finalising scripts for her company.

A source informs, “Mallika has launched her banner Blue Velvet and is currently reading piles of scripts that she has received. She intends to support projects that she believes in. Many filmmakers have dropped their scripts at her office and from what we hear, upto 50 scripts are being scanned right now. Her brother Vikram will be looking at the financial aspects of the firm.” “It is quite likely that Mallika will start her production house by backing the stuck film Fauj Mein Mauj which is directed by Murli Nagavalli, who has been an assistant to Priyadarshan earlier. The film has Mallika Sherawat playing a female cadet in the Indian army. The film also stars Sahil Khan, Paresh Rawal and Rajpal Yadav.”

However, Ravi Walia the producer of Fauj Mein Mauj denied it, saying, “There is no truth in it. My film is being solely produced by me and I have no clue if Mallika is turning a producer or anything.”

The spunky lass from the heartland of jatland has launched her own banner named ‘Blue Velvet’ and scripts are pouring in.

“She intends to support projects that she believes in,” a source told the Mumbai Mirror.

What she believes in, incidentally, may not be what you think she believes in or what you think she should believe in.

Aware that her twin assets, well rounded and sumptuous as they may be, aren’t going to keep her afloat in the industry for too long even in these times of silicone and botox, Mallika had been toying with the idea of starting her own production company for some time.

Late last month there was news that Mallika will jointly produce the film Bollywood Bombshell with Govind Menon, the director who cast her in the mould of a Bollywood sex siren with films such as Khwahish (2003), Kis Kis Ki Kismat (2004) and Bachke Rehna Re Baba (2005)

There are now reports that Mallika will back the production of the comedy Fauj Mein Mauj which is reportedly stalled awaiting dates from Mallika.

In the film, half of which has already been shot, Mallika plays the first female officer to join an infantry division.

Ravi Walia, the producer of Fauj Mein Mauj denies, Mallika is getting involved in his film.

“There is no truth in it. My film is being solely produced by me and I have no clue if Mallika is turning a producer or anything,” he says

PS: What was Mallika thinking when she named her production company, we wonder?

mallikaThe intrepid Mallika Sherawat has an unlikely supporter in Sushmita Sen who is quite impressed with her “spirit and spunk”.

“I really think she has a lot of spirit and spunk and tremendous audacity,” Sushmita told IANS.

“To have come from where she has and to establish her own identity, and to have that kind of spirit couldn’t be easy. But she has done it,” she added.

Tell her Mallika speaks of Sushmita as some kind of a role model, and the actress smiles. “Really? I haven’t met Mallika but the little that I know of her, I like her.”

Mallika, who is transcending borders with Bill Bannerman’s “Unveiled”, seems to subscribe to Sushmita’s school of thought.

“I don’t know what Mallika’s thoughts are. But I feel every role I’ve played so far has been a stepping stone towards the goal that I’ve set for myself. To get to a summit you need to climb step by step. I think I’ve been climbing the stairs very steadily.”

Talking about her journey in Bollywood, Sushmita said that she knew she would have to work hard to reach the top since the beginning. She never expected instant success.

“Not for a minute did I believe I had to be Madhuri Dixit just because I came into the film industry as Miss Universe. I knew I had to work hard to get there. Some people get there more easily than others. But that’s life. Maybe I’ve made some major mistakes in my career. And I continue to make them even today. But that’s part of the growing experience.”

So what keeps Sushmita going and growing?

“The one thing that nourishes me constantly is my self identity. I’m very comfortable with who and what I am. I am an actress only when the camera is switched on. The minute it’s over I go back to being myself.

“I don’t make an effort to make other people comfortable. I feel I can’t be an image for people. I have to be a real person. I have to be absolutely me.”

Ask her what ‘absolutely me’ is, and she said: “Absolutely me is tonnes of contradictions. It’s being an enigma even to myself at times. It’s someone only I knew, and that too once in a while.”
