Anjana Sukhani may have been relegated to back seat in SUNDAY where she played Ayesha Takia’s friend but her career is certainly going in the right direction.

ALLAH KE BANDE also stars Naseruddin Shah, Atul Kulkarni and Anupam Kher.

Ayesha says, “There’re things that I wouldn’t do, like kiss and wear certain kinds of clothes. And yes that does put me at a disadvantage. But I’m very happy with the work that I’m getting. After Dor, I’m being taken seriously as an actress.”

Her saying no to kissing, is however, causing her to lose out on parts but Ayesha says, “But I don’t mind losing out on roles. At least ten years from now I don’t want to look back and cringe at anything. I’ve a family and a boyfriend. And I don’t want to embarrass anyone.”

One role was in the film Aashayein, directed by Nagesh Kukunoor, “I just couldn’t do the kissing scene in Aashayein. We tried to find a way out. But it didn’t work out for me. Fortunately for me, Nagesh is a dear friend. He didn’t hold my ‘No’ against me,” Ayesha said.

In fact she has been filming for Nagesh’s Tasveer opposite Akshay Kumar. “We completed Tasveer with Akshay Kumar in Canada. And there was nothing there to made me uncomfortable.”

Next in the pipline is a film opposite Salman Khan, “I’ve Prabhu Deva’s Wanted, an action film with Salman Khan. Here I don’t have much to do. I hang around doing whatever leading ladies do …sing, dance and purse my lips when the hero fights.”

About her boyfriend Ayesha says, “I’m so glad Farhan is not a part of the industry. And that he’s a self- made man who loves me for whom I am. I don’t think having a boyfriend is any problem for a career. The only annoying part of having a boyfriend is that every time I’ve a release I’m informed by the press that I’m getting married in two months. It irritates me. When I get married I’ll announce it from rooftops. I’m proud of my boyfriend.”

Ayesha Takia is shooting down roles that require her to wear skimpy clothes or get intimate with her co-star because she doesn’t want to embarrass her family and boyfriend.

Ayesha is aware that her more uninhibited colleagues are benefiting while she refuses to get bold on camera.

“But I don’t mind losing out on roles. At least 10 years from now I don’t want to look back and cringe at anything. I’ve a family and a boyfriend. And I don’t want to embarrass anyone,” Ayesha, who was recently seen in ‘Sunday’ in a clean role, told us.

Candid in her self-assessment, she sees a boyfriend as no impediment to her career.

Last year she had a rough patch when ‘Salaam-e-Ishq’ and ‘No Smoking’ bombed.

“Everyone kept asking why I reappeared in ‘No Smoking’ in a double role. I’d like all questions about that film to be directed to Anurag Kashyap. I’ve no clue. It was a small role, just 10 days’ work. I’d do another film for Anurag anytime. He’s a friend.”

‘What if one day went missing from your life?’ is the tagline to this attempt at a comic murder caper. A more appropriate blurb should have been: ‘Are you prepared to lose two and a half hours of your time?’

It opens in Delhi with the murder of a young woman by her lover. We then meet crooked cop Rajvir (Ajay Devgan) as he chases a drug dealer across the rooftops of Chandni Chowk, a suburb. Meanwhile, dubbing artist Shahar (Ayesha Takia) decides to party at a disco on Saturday night. She is understandably worried when she wakes up the next day and realises it’s actually Monday. Shahar has no recollection of her ‘missing Sunday’.

“How could I forget?” is the profound query Shahar poses to Rajvir as they attempt to unravel events. It emerges that she encountered various strangers on her way home. These include a cabbie, a struggling actor and two lads with mischief on their minds. She becomes a murder suspect when one of them is found murdered.

Will Sundays ever be the same again for our hapless heroine?

Director Rohit Shetty aims for an entertaining comic thriller. He flounders on all counts. Expect Bollywood base humour. Targets include deriving laughs from people with speech and voice impediments, the on-going Kashmiri conflict between India and Pakistan, South Indians, gay rape and, most outrageously, the 9/11 tragedy.

Frequent ‘Matrix meets Charlie Angels’ type action sequences with lots of split screen montages and slow motion shots of men and chillies flying in the air are resorted to in order to generate thrills. This would be forgivable if had Shetty adopted a propulsive pace. Instead, just as the mystery deepens, the plot pauses for the lovers to sing the obligatory romantic duet. Further, proceedings are swamped by two ‘item’ dance numbers, performed by star kids.

Talented actors like Devgan, Arshad Warsi and Irrfan Khan retain their dignity in the feeble frolics. The top heavy Takia, sporting a frilly dress and denim jacket, delivers the surprise performance and you almost feel sorry for her character’s plight.

The denouement, when it finally comes, is as predictable as the numerous touristy shots of New Delhi and the filmic Tarantino flourishes. Tighter plotting and some sophisticated jokes would have lifted this remake of a Telugu flop to a worth a look level. As it is, this is an amnesic Sunday.

I was to blow smoke on her face for a particular scene and it took some shots to get it right. She obviously must’ve felt uncomfortable, more so because she is a non-smoker. So it was only courteous that I apologise. It’s his gentlemanly ways and chivalry that make him so ‘mind-blowing’!

Vijay and Prabhu Deva had earlier teamed up to render a blockbuster hit in Pokiri.

Vijay is currently acting in Azhagiya Tamil Magan. Soon, he would commence shooting for Kuruvi, a movie to be directed by Dharani and produced by Udhayanidhi, grandson of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.

After Kuruvi, Vijay will shoot for Prabhu Deva’s film.
